Like most Tuscan hill towns, Siena was founded by the Etruscans. According to legend, however, it had Roman origins having been founded by Senius, son of Remus, thus the town’s emblem: a she-wolf suckling the infants Romulus and Remus. Since it was not situated on any of the major roads and had no possibility for trade, Siena had to await the invasion of the Lombards to know prosperity. They re-routed all the roads between the northern possessions and Rome, creating new trading posts as well as a new course for the pilgrims. The 13th century saw the republic of Siena, predominantly Ghibelline, politically competing with its rival, Florence, of Guelph faction – later the setting of Dante’s Commedia. This ended with the victory of Siena in the Battle of Montaperti in 1260.
During the 13th and 14th centuries, Siena also rivalled Florence in the arts with important painters such as Duccio di Buoninsegna and the Lorenzetti brothers, Ambrogio and Pietro. The late-Medieval/early Renaissance was artistically an extremely productive period. A highly successful model of civil architecture is the elegant Palazzo Pubblico, in the shadow of the Torre del Mangia, which dramatically marks the skyline of the town as a constant reference point for the approaching traveller. At the edge of the celebrated Piazza del Campo, the Palazzo is the hub of the city life today, as it was in the past when it was used as a marketplace. Its interior, much of it now a museum, is a sort of compendium of the great Sienese painting of the 14th century and includes works such as the fresco of the mysterious knight, known as Guidoriccio da Fogliano by Simone Martini and the Allegory and Effects of Good and Bad Government by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
The Assunta Cathedral, a fairly rare example of Romanesque architecture, was intended to become one of the biggest churches in the Christian world; its oldest part dates back to the 13th century. It is impossible to list all the treasures it contains, but a mention must be made to the famous Gothic octagonal pulpit, jointly created by Nicola Pisano and Arnolfo del Cambio, to the floor of inlaid marble divided into fifty-six panels of immense iconographic coherence, to the Piccolomini altar with early sculptures by Michelangelo and lastly to the Libreria Piccolomini with its famous cycle of 16th century frescoes by Pinturicchio.
Nevertheless, one must also relish the pleasure of strolling through Siena’s narrow streets and large squares, World Heritage Site, discovering its Renaissance heart as well as tasting its wines and the excellent food products. Siena, indeed, reveals a sweet and spicy heart. Vin Santo, holy wine, is its dessert wine par excellence, ideal for serving with panforte, somewhat similar to a fruitcake with nuts. This wine, the result of a loving, patient production process, wins people over with its bouquet of dried fruit and honey and its amber colour. Siena’s treasure is definitely made up of spices, honey and hints of amber. This city lives in perfect harmony with its art and its desserts.
For those in search of feverish excitement, colours, and crowd, a visit must be undertaken on July the 2nd or August the 16th when the Palio of Siena is held. This traditional medieval horse race is, in fact, run around the Piazza del Campo each year. Attended by many people, the Palio, which lasts no more than 90 seconds, represents life, passion and history for the Sienese population conjugating joy and pain, courage and intrigue, loyalty and betrayal. The race is preceded by a spectacular pageant in magnificent Medieval costumes. An experience which attracts visitors and spectators from around the world.
