Mugello

One of the wildest areas of Tuscany is the Mugello. But despite this, the Mugello has always been one of the favourite places for aristocrats who built here their hunting lodges. In recent times these houses have been restored and are now beautiful Tuscan villas for rent. As these lords owned a lot of land, they employed farmers to cultivate their property and consequently today the farmhouses have been renovated into beautiful and comfortable apartments for rent in the Mugello.
A few kilometres from Florence, among rolling hills, tall cypresses, mountain peaks and passes, the Mugello stretches. Here you will discover silent waters, a delightful countryside, friendly and hard-working people and healthy food.
It is an Apennine land, beautiful and impressive, covered by beeches, chestnuts and oak woods interspersed with valleys which create a harmonious patchwork, crossed by the Sieve river.
Although the Mugello stands somewhat isolated by mountains and woods, it has been, for centuries, a mere rural extension of Florence, influenced by its history, notably by the Medicis.
The Medici family, who was native of this land, had palaces, castles and convents built here. In the Cafaggiolo Villa, Lorenzo il Magnifico escaped from the "res pubblica" to take refuge in the tranquillity of the fields. Here he celebrated and rediscovered joy, beauty and life.
Also the Lorena family made it their pride and joy by investing financial resources to strengthen their presence around Florence.
Important buildings and fortresses, castles, villas and palaces remain here as witnesses of the link of Florentine rulers with the Mugello.
Moreover, even the cultural and artistic history of Florence finds outstanding elements for its development in this area.
Artists like Giotto and Beato Angelico were born here; the features in the landscape of many Florentine paintings have found their inspiration here.
Lovers of healthy, simple and tasty food are invited to come to this part of Tuscany to discover, besides the magnificent historical and architectural landmarks, the traditional dishes and a variety of local products that have kept up their authenticity to these very days.
Here cooking fits in perfectly with a modern life-style where quality and authenticity are sought after. Our suggestion might be a nice stop in one of the many restaurants of the area, savouring the traditional dishes, after whetting your eyes with a landscape studded by towers castles, manors or Romanesque churches.
To not forget the wine. This is the reign of two wines which have been famous for centuries: the Chianti Rufina DOCG and the Pomino DOC.
Each has its own personality and characteristics.
A visit to the “cantine” (wine cellars) can become an excuse to discover the many beauties of this area: Pontassieve, Pelago, Rufina, Londa.
Art and nature, wine and food; but also sports. Mugello is also internationally renowned for its race track hosting such events as the Grand Prix motorcycle racing and Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters.
If you like shopping the Designer Shopping Outlets rich in “Made in Italy” items will be great fun.
A holiday here can be all this and much more.
