The province of Arezzo attracts numerous tourists for its beautiful holiday homes in the Casentino or accommodations in the Val di Chiana, as well as for the Tuscan villas for rent. Important Etruscan centre known to the Romans as Arretium, it was a wealthy polis famous for pottery which made its way through the classical world. Florence conquered it at the end of the 13th century during the battle of Campaldino, made famous by Dante, at the time exiled in the Casentino.
A period of decline followed.
Great alterations to the urban walls were made by the Medici. The Medici Fortress in Arezzo, on the top of the hill, dates from that period and it was during the work of fortification that two great masterpieces of Etruscan bronze sculpture came to light: the Minerva and the Chimera now in the Archaeological Museum of Florence. The main square, Piazza Grande, once the Roman forum, is dignified by the Loggia built by the native Giorgio Vasari, the grand-ducal architect par excellence. At the highest point of the city, on the ancient “poggio di San Donato” stands the cathedral built in the 13th century on the site of a Benedictine church. The imposing building we see today is the result of a long process that lasted right up to the 16th century. Here it is worth visiting the highly impressive fresco of Mary Magdalene by Piero della Francesca which, together with his History of the True Cross, in San Francesco, are unanimously regarded dramatic masterpieces of European Renaissance art.
The noblest building in the city, for its antiquity and for the history to which it bears witness, is the parish church of Santa Maria, known simply as La Pieve, housing the Virgin with Child and Saints by Pietro Lorenzetti. Anyone aiming to discover the Tuscan art treasures, especially in Arezzo and Siena, has to become acquainted with the Lorenzetti brothers, Pietro and Ambrogio, who rank in importance with the greatest of the Italian Sienese School. Their empirical exploration of linear and aerial perspective led to an increasing rendering of space thus anticipating the Renaissance and winning for modern visitors that enduring feeling of time and space which turns a voyage into a human and spiritual adventure.
